Snark Squad Pod #007 – Near Dark with Nick Jenkins

Previously: A sex sonic boom sapped us of all happy feelings.

Sweeney: When we launched the podcast, we were careful to launch with a string of somewhat disparate media – a TV show, a YA novel, a movie, and a thematic conversation. Mostly, this was about making it clear that all media was fair game for the podcast; we were not going to be a TV podcast or a book podcast or – you get the idea.

That said, movies are kind of our weak spot. They’re great for us because we are consuming a fuck ton of media and a movie is an easier ask than a full season of television or a book (particularly if you are a very slow reader, like me). But they’re not our go-to critiquing media. For the most part we’ve only done movies on the site for #snarkathon or because there is a movie to cap off a show we’re recapping. (Sometimes both at once.)

AND SO when I asked my dear friend Nick Jenkins to be on the podcast, rather than asking him to come discuss a thing, as we usually do, I thought it would be more fun to ask him to pick a movie. He’s a former film professor with a podcast of his own that we’ve mentioned quite a few times – Reel Bad – and I told him he could take a break from talking about shitty movies and talk about any movie his choice. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely was not 1987’s vampire thriller Near Dark.

Much to our surprise, though, we had a ton of fun. Find out what we loved, what maybe didn’t work as well, and why Nick chose this particular film on this week’s episode of the podcast:

Nicole is the co-captain of Snark Squad and these days she spends most of her time editing podcasts. She spends too much time on Twitter and very occasionally vlogs and blogs. In her day job she's a producer, editor, director, and sometimes host of educational YouTube channels. She loves travel, maps, panda gifs, and semicolons. Writing biographies stresses her out; she crowd sourced this one years ago and has been using a version of it ever since. She would like to thank Twitter for their help.
