20 Reasons Buffy the Vampire Slayer Endures – #BuffySlays20

Almost five years ago, our baby website decided to expand from its usual fare (the terrible books we read as children) to cover a TV show. At the insistence of my friends, I’d watched the pilot episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer even before the founding of the blog. In fact, “Childhood Trauma” was the first name of this blog, thanks to the classic line in the pilot. When it came time to pick a show to cover here, it seemed natural to start with Buffy.

Orange County is pretty! That’s how we open before settling in on the Cohen home, where Kirsten exposits that Ryan hasn’t spoken to them in days. Sandy says he’s not worried about Ryan not talking to the two of them, but he is concerned that Ryan’s still ignoring Seth.

Meanwhile, Ryan’s on the phone with Julie, who’s pouting about Sandy and Kirsten uninviting her from Thanksgiving. Kirsten and Sandy are discussing this as well, and Sandy says sending their kids on a murder mission knocks you off the guest list.

Supernatural S05 E15 – The Bathilda Bagshot incident.

by Samantha March 30, 2016 Season 5
Thumbnail image for Supernatural S05 E15 – The Bathilda Bagshot incident.

We open at a cemetery where it’s storming and hands start reaching out of the graves. Soon, a guy crawls all of the way out.

Kirsti: It was very Buffy-esque, to be honest, and I still can’t decide if it was intentional or not.

Samantha: Head cannon that it was intentional.

A man is watching an animal documentary and drinking a beer. There’s some scare fake outs and then zombie guy is in the house. He kills beer guy.

BLOOOOOOOOOD.

Supernatural S05 E11 – Here are some gifs.

We open at a psychiatric hospital where a woman patient sits in the doctor’s office. He asks why she refuses to take her medication and she says that they make her sleepy and if she sleeps the monster will come. The doctor is all “yeah, but this monster is just a symptom of the schizophrenia that you have, let me describe it to you.” Susan says that she knows what she is, she can see her dead son, but this monster is real and killed Annie. He keeps psycho babbling and refuses to believe.

Supernatural S05 E10 – Who lives, who dies, who tells your story

In the process of setting up this post, I realised which episode this is, and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE. DO NOT WANT. Can we just skip ahead and pretend this one doesn’t happen?? No?

Well, fuck. Let’s raid the Supernatural drinks fridge and do this thing.

Samantha: Oh my god, I started drinking a full 24 hours before in preparation. NO PLEASE.

K: We open with a middle-aged dude in a limo pulling up under a freeway interchange. He buries a box in the dirt. “Mr Pendleton, I presume?” comes a British voice from behind him. He turns around and it’s MARK SHEPPARD!! Mark Sheppard is in at least one episode of basically every show I’ve ever loved.

Supernatural S05 E07 – Dean is Hamiltrash.

by Samantha January 27, 2016 Season 5
Thumbnail image for Supernatural S05 E07 – Dean is Hamiltrash.

We open with a woman on the couch reading one of those trashy magazines that declares the Apocolypse here. A man comes in the front door and she greets him but he just runs straight upstairs. He heads into the bathroom all sweaty and panicked. He looks into the mirror as his skin begins to wrinkle and his hair falls out. He turns into an old old man and collapses into a cabinet. (K: It’s very…Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)

Supergirl S01 E09 – I am not okay with this.

The episode picks up right where the last episode ended. Supergirl and Non go busting through the ceiling of Lord Technologies and begin to duke it out in the sky. They’re briefly interrupted by an airplane RUDELY flying in the middle of their fight but they carry on by smashing into the ground. Non has Supergirl in a chokehold and tells Supergirl that she’s as weak as any human. Hank comes out with a blaster gun thing and Non drops Kara to go after Hank. Is this a good time to ask what they wanted with Lord Technologies in the first place?

Doctor Who S03 E10 – The littlest ship

I’m really curious to recap this episode, because it’s easily been one of my favourites up until now. (Which is odd because it’s written by Steven Moffat, and I’ve basically hated everything about his time as show runner…) But favourite things don’t always stand up to being watched incredibly slowly, so…we’ll see.

We open with CAREY MULLIGAN!!! climbing over a creepy fence into the grounds of a creepy house in the creepy rain accompanied by creepy music. There’s a “Danger: Keep Out” sign on the gate.

Supernatural S04 E10 – Wrong angel

by Kirsti July 18, 2015 Season 4
Thumbnail image for Supernatural S04 E10 – Wrong angel

We continue on immediately after Cas dropping his “we’re gonna kill Anna” bombshell, and the boys demand to know why because she’s an innocent girl. Uriel chuckles and says she’s far from innocent, and almost as gross as Ruby. He demands that they hand her over. “Sorry. Get yourself another one. Try JDate,” Dean sasses. I admit, I did chuckle a bit at that.

Uriel calls Ruby a “demon whore” so that we can get our first round of misogyny shots over nice and early, and a fight breaks out. Uriel pins Ruby against a wall, and Dean rushes over to help. Cas walks slowly towards Sam, who begs him not to do this.

Doctor Who S02 E09 – The devil you meet.

We had such a lovely time last episode, I’m feeling all giddy about this recap! Shoutout to the, um, science side of that recap (basically Mairead…) for the insight into black holes. (K: SERIOUSLY. I may be shitty at replying to comments, but those comments were the freaking bomb.) Now, let’s all watch as the show ignores all that science and gets to the FEELS shall we?

Oh, we cut from really extensive previouslies to the credits:

Doctor Who S02 E06 – Cyberman rave parties

by Kirsti March 28, 2015 Doctor Who
Thumbnail image for Doctor Who S02 E06 – Cyberman rave parties

After the previouslies, we go straight to the credits, because why the fuck not. DOO WEE OOH.

After the credits, the Doctor aims a mystery thing at the Cybermen, and a beam of orange light bursts out. It hits one Cyberman and spreads to the others, kind of like how the Nazis die in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Cybermen crumble to ash and everyone makes a run for it.

I cannot stop laughing over that gif. Conveniently, Driver pulls up in the blue van and everyone piles in. Except for A Pete, who makes a run for the house to rescue A Jackie.

Gotham S01 E15 – Butter knife coup

by Alex March 4, 2015 Gotham
Thumbnail image for Gotham S01 E15 – Butter knife coup

It’s a stormy night in Gotham. (M: WHAT?! It’s usually so bright and cheery.) A random guy with white hair arrives home to his Generic Gotham Apartment and grumbles about the wind blowing through an open window. He goes to shut it, but two guys in hoodies appear and grab him as he screams in terror.

Fish wakes up on the floor in some kind of prison, dashing my hopes that her leaving Gotham the city for a while also meant she would be leaving Gotham the show. Sigh. She asks the friendly-looking guy nearby if she’s dreaming, and he replies that he hopes so. Two scary-looking thugs saunter over, chuckling to themselves.

Doctor Who S02 E03 – Blast from the past

by Marines February 5, 2015 Doctor Who
Thumbnail image for Doctor Who S02 E03 – Blast from the past

We’ll start this with an announcement: Sweeney is officially bowing out of these recaps. It’s mostly because she needed to reorganize how she spends her time and this was an easier thing to take off her plate. She can probably tell you all her reasoning in the comments, because she’s still going to try and hang out there and perhaps keep up with the series. That said, Sara will be joining us as the third recapper and our official Snow. YAY SARA!

Now episode:

GILES. I’m glad we’re getting this out of the way so soon in the episode because GILES, GILES, GILES!

Doctor Who S01 E08 – Don’t cross the streams

by Kirsti November 12, 2014 Doctor Who
Thumbnail image for Doctor Who S01 E08 – Don’t cross the streams

We open with a slightly terrifying close-up of a ginger bloke and Rose voiceover-ing about her dad, the most wonderful man in the world. I feel like I know the ginger bloke from something, but IMDb informs me it’s just One Episode of Every British Police Show Ever. (M: A+) That throws us into a flashback of Jackie showing Mini!Rose photos of her father and telling her about the day he died, how it was the same day that friends of hers got married. In the TARDIS, Rose asks the Doctor if they can go and see her father when he was still alive. The Doctor is briefly concerned and tells her “be careful what you wish for” but agrees with a grin nonetheless. He pulls some controls and the TARDIS vworp vworps.

Supernatural S02 E20 – I dream of djinn(ie)

by Kirsti November 12, 2014 Season 2
Thumbnail image for Supernatural S02 E20 – I dream of djinn(ie)

In the previouslies, we’re treated to a bunch of clips of Mary and Jessica to let us know that this episode is going to be suuuuuuper fun. When we’re done with previouslies, Dean’s in the Bromobile, which now has new plates. Because that TOTALLY makes it less obvious. Sam phones to say that there’s a cop car outside their motel. He heaves a sigh of relief when it leaves. Sam asks if Dean’s got anything, but LOL NOPE because Sam’s got him searching a massive area. Sam – books and Filofax of Shadows open to relevant entries – reveals that they’re hunting a djinn. Dean gushes about how hot Barbara Eden was, and Sam eyerolls before saying that djinns like to hole up in ruins.
