Snark Squad Pod #013 – A Game of Thrones with Democracy Diva

Previously: We talked about superhero stories, teen soaps, and a teen soap superhero story.

Marines: We’ve already dedicated thousands and thousands of words to this universe, though in the form of the HBO series, Game of ThronesSweeney and I started that project as two non-book readers. I tried, over the years, to pick the book up but struggled for a number of reasons. High fantasy is not Sweeney’s thing. I know this isn’t sounding like a recipe for picking up A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, but a few things:

1- Along the way, Sam (Democracy Diva) joined the recaps and brought her knowledge and enthusiasm as a book reader.

2- We created the Snark Squad Discord (which you can join by signing up for our newsletter!) and there, almost immediately concocted the idea of doing a group read of the ASOIAF series, and dedicating a podcast episode to each book.

3- We’ve got to do something while we wait for the final season.

And so, here we are! Spoilers abound and we talk a fair amount about the comparison between TV and book, but what can you expect from converted TV show watchers? Find out what we thought of the experience, which characters improved, and the most painful things to revisit:

I'm a 30-something south Floridan who loves the beach but cannot swim. Such is my life, full of small contradictions and little trivialities. My main life goals are never to take life too seriously, but to do everything I attempt seriously well. After that, my life goals devolve into things like not wearing pants and eating all of the Zebra Cakes in the world. THE WORLD.
