Snark Squad Pod #026 – Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Previously: We had a lot of feelings about what it means to call yourself a fan.

Sweeney: After our friend Chelsea joined us to discuss A Wrinkle in Time we wanted to have her back again, so we decided to have her recommend a book to us. She chose 2017’s Eliza & Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia.

Chelsea’s also got her own podcast called Not Now, I’m Reading and a BookTube channel where you can find even more of her bookish opinions. You can also find her on Twitter.

We weren’t sure what to expect of this story about a girl who anonymously publishes a popular webcomic. I’ll leave it to the podcast to tell you what we thought of her journey as she meets a boy who is one of her biggest fanfic authors and double-life shenanigans ensue, but I will say up top, as a content warning: the book also deals mental health struggles and does include a discussion of suicide. We don’t talk about it at great length, but because it is in this book, it is also in this episode of the podcast.

On to the episode:

For those of you watching and reading along, here is our planned upcoming media in the order they’ll be released: The Bold Type, Annihilation, A Storm of Swords, Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Gravity Falls.

Nicole Sweeney (all posts)

Nicole is the co-captain of Snark Squad and these days she spends most of her time editing podcasts. She spends too much time on Twitter and very occasionally vlogs and blogs. In her day job she's a producer, editor, director, and sometimes host of educational YouTube channels. She loves travel, maps, panda gifs, and semicolons. Writing biographies stresses her out; she crowd sourced this one years ago and has been using a version of it ever since. She would like to thank Twitter for their help.
