Snark Squad Pod #103 – Birds of Prey (2020)

Previously: A beloved book series is being adapted into a miniseries on HBO so of course we watched it.

Sweeney: In theory making fewer episodes was meant to get us to a place where we were more intentional and thoughtful about what we chose to put on the show, but if I’m being perfectly honest, I can’t tell you exactly how we got here. Mari was working on the calendar and mentioned that this movie was coming out and I think I said that in spite of my refusal to see any more DC movies I would probably see this one and I guess that was that?

I say all of this because on paper, this is not our thing: points against it first for DC, which I have opted out of, and again for it being an incredibly violent movie centering a villain. But! It’s also a female-led film with women writing and directing, and the trailers had a very intense aesthetic and when I think about all my favorite movies they are all extremely AESTHETIC in some way or another.

And so here we are. In order to help us decide if this movie worked for us or not, we invited Snark Lady Jessica back. In addition to her previous appearance our Charlie’s Angels episode and recapping many things over the years here on this website, she can also be found on Twitter, or on her horror movie podcast, Macabre Bros.
