Snark Squad Pod #104 – Emma. (2020)

Previously: Despite multiple reasons it shouldn’t have been for us, Birds of Prey was pretty delightful.

Marines: Oh my goodness, is this another podcast episode about Emma? Just kidding, If you know literally anything about your snarky Captains, you are not surprised at all. We are pretty big Austen fans around here, and while my favorite will always be Pride and Prejudice, Nicole’s is Emma. About 50 episodes ago, we talked about all things big picture Emma, but we’re back today to talk about this story’s most recent adaptation, Emma PERIOD, directed by Autumn de Wilde and starring Anya Taylor Joy.

We invited good friends of the pod Deboki (who you most recently heard on The Witcher episode) and Jocelyn (who you most recently heard on the His Dark Materials episode) for this round. Deboki Chakravarti is a science communicator who makes amazing YouTube videos about books and science. Jocelyn shares all her many wonderful bookish insights on Twitter and YouTube.

Okay, so, did we like it? How effectively did this adaptation bring Emma, handsome clever and rich, to life? And was Austen’s signature humor and sass there?

I'm a 30-something south Floridan who loves the beach but cannot swim. Such is my life, full of small contradictions and little trivialities. My main life goals are never to take life too seriously, but to do everything I attempt seriously well. After that, my life goals devolve into things like not wearing pants and eating all of the Zebra Cakes in the world. THE WORLD.
